All About North Raleigh, NC

North Raleigh is a neighborhood in the northern section of Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina and the seat of Wake County. It is known as the “City of Oaks” for its many oak trees and has a population of close to half a million people. The name Raleigh comes from Walter Raleigh, sponsor of the lost Roanoke Colony.

Raleigh was established in 1792 and designed as an early example of a planned city in the US, built specifically to be the state capital. Raleigh managed to avoid destruction by the Union army at the end of the Civil War when Mayor William H. Harrison surrendered with a promise of no resistance to General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick.

In recent years, Raleigh has made it onto many top 10 lists for its quality of life and favorable business climate. Part of North Carolina’s Research Triangle, the city is a major center in the US for biotech and high-tech research.
