Answering Our Patients’ Biggest Questions

If you have questions about root canals, endodontic treatment, or what to expect when you visit our office, you’re not alone. Many patients come to us feeling uncertain or anxious, and we want to change that. This endodontic FAQs page is designed to give you clear, honest answers so you feel confident and informed before your appointment. At HH Hancock III Root Canal Endodontist, our goal is to make every patient feel heard, prepared, and well cared for.

1. What is an endodontist, and how is one different from a general dentist?

An endodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the inside of the tooth, particularly the pulp and root canal system. After completing dental school, endodontists complete two or more additional years of advanced specialty training. While general dentists provide a wide range of dental services, endodontists focus specifically on saving teeth through procedures like root canal therapy, retreatment, and endodontic surgery.

2. Do root canals hurt?

This is one of the most common questions in any endodontic FAQs, and the answer might surprise you. Most patients find that a root canal is no more uncomfortable than getting a routine filling. Modern anesthetics and techniques make the procedure virtually painless. In fact, most patients come in with significant tooth pain and leave feeling much better. Our team at HH Hancock III takes every step to ensure your comfort throughout the process.

3. Why has my dentist referred me to an endodontist?

Your general dentist refers patients to a specialist in Raleigh endodontics when a case requires advanced expertise, specialized equipment, or a level of precision that goes beyond routine care. Common reasons for a referral include complex root canal anatomy, persistent infection, dental trauma, or the need for retreatment after a previous root canal.

4. What is root canal retreatment?

Root canal retreatment is performed when a tooth that previously received root canal therapy does not heal as expected, or when it develops a new problem. During retreatment, the original filling material is removed, the canals are cleaned thoroughly, and the tooth is resealed. Retreatment gives a previously treated tooth a second chance at long-term health and function.

5. How do I know if I need a root canal?

Common signs that you may need a root canal include persistent or severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, pain when biting or chewing, swelling or tenderness in the gums, and darkening of the tooth. That said, some teeth requiring root canal therapy cause no symptoms at all, which is why regular dental checkups are so important. If your dentist has recommended an evaluation, trust that recommendation.

6. What is an apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy, also called root-end surgery, is a minor surgical procedure performed when infection persists near the root tip after root canal treatment. During the procedure, the endodontist removes the tip of the root and any surrounding infected tissue, then seals the root end to prevent re-infection. It is a precise, effective solution for cases where non-surgical retreatment is not sufficient.

7. How long does a root canal take?

Most root canal appointments are completed in about 60 to 90 minutes, though more complex cases or retreatment procedures may take longer. We will give you a realistic estimate once we have evaluated your tooth and reviewed your imaging. Our team works efficiently while never rushing the quality of your care.

8. Does HH Hancock III accept dental insurance?

Our practice is not in-network with any dental insurance company. However, we will file your insurance claim on your behalf as a courtesy, and full payment is due at the time of service. We do accept CareCredit for patients who need a payment flexibility option.

9. What technology does your office use?

Our practice features the J. Morita Veraview X800, a state-of-the-art 2D/3D cone beam CT imaging system that allows for precise, three-dimensional views of the tooth and surrounding structures. We also use digital X-rays and a Fotona SkyPulse Pro laser, which is designed specifically for endodontic procedures. These tools allow us to diagnose more accurately and treat more effectively.

10. Do you treat children?

Yes, we do treat some pediatric patients when endodontic care is needed. If your child has been referred to our office, please call us so we can discuss their specific situation and what to expect during the visit.
